Common Questions

GTA 6 Storage FAQ

Everything you need to know before launch day — answered.

How big is GTA 6?

GTA 6 reportedly requires approximately 210GB of storage on PS5 — making it one of the largest games ever released. For context, Red Dead Redemption 2 was around 105GB, so GTA 6 is roughly double. This figure may increase with day-one patches and future updates.

When does GTA 6 pre-loading start?

Pre-loading is expected to begin on November 12, 2026 — one week before the November 19 launch. You'll need storage space clear before that date to start the download.

Will GTA 6 fit on my PS5 without an upgrade?

Technically yes — if your PS5 is completely empty, you have ~667GB of usable space and GTA 6 needs 210GB. But most people already have games installed. If you have more than 457GB of games, you'll either need to delete some or add an M.2 SSD upgrade.

What SSD specifications does the PS5 require?

You need an M.2 NVMe SSD using PCIe Gen 4 with at least 5,500MB/s sequential read speed. A heatsink is mandatory — Sony requires it, and performance degrades without one. The combined SSD + heatsink height must not exceed 11.25mm to fit the PS5 expansion bay. All SSDs on our recommended list meet these requirements.

Can I store GTA 6 on an external USB drive?

No. PS5 games must be stored on either the internal SSD or an M.2 expansion drive. USB external drives can only store PS4 games on PS5. However, you can use a USB drive to move PS4 titles off your internal drive to free up space for GTA 6.

What about Xbox Series S owners?

The Xbox Series S only has 364GB of usable storage. GTA 6 would take up 210GB — leaving just 154GB for everything else. We strongly recommend picking up the Seagate 2TB Xbox Expansion Card if you're on a Series S. Xbox uses proprietary expansion cards, not M.2 SSDs — so you can't use the same drives as PS5 owners.

Do I need a heatsink with my PS5 SSD?

Yes — Sony's official guidance requires a heatsink, and without one the SSD will thermally throttle and perform poorly. Many of our recommended SSDs include a heatsink in the box. If yours doesn't, you can grab a compatible standalone heatsink (like the Sabrent PS5 heatsink) for under £15.

How long does it take to install a PS5 SSD?

The physical installation takes about 5–10 minutes with a #1 Phillips screwdriver. The PS5 will then prompt you to format the new drive, which takes another 2 minutes. See our full step-by-step install guide for the whole process.

Is GTA 6 coming to PC?

Not at launch. GTA 6 releases exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. A PC version hasn't been officially confirmed, but is widely expected sometime in 2027.

How much does a PS5 SSD upgrade cost?

A quality 2TB M.2 SSD with heatsink typically costs between £150–£200 on Amazon UK. This gives you enough space for GTA 6 plus 20–30 other large games. See our top picks for current pricing and direct links.
